Rector’s elections in spring 2017
The debate of the rector candidates will be held on 9 March in the assembly hall of the University of Tartu.
On 16 March at 16:15 the rector candidates will meet the international staff and international students of the university in the round auditorium of New Anatomical Theatre (Näituse 2).
On 16 March at the latest the council and the senate present their opinion on the suitability of the candidates to the position of the rector. The council and the senate may rank the candidates.
The rector is elected for a term of five years by the electoral council, which comprises the members of the council, the senate, faculty councils and the student council, as well as professors and lead research fellows whose work load is at least 20 hours per week. The list of the electoral council members will be approved as of 13 March.
The electoral council will elect the rector in an election meeting presided by the chair of the election commission. The election meeting will take place on 30 March at 12:00 in the university’s assembly hall. The election meeting has a quorum if more than a half of the members of the electoral council attend the meeting. The candidate will be elected for whom more than a half of the electoral council members have voted.
If the rector is not elected, the term of office of the incumbent rector will be extended by one year. If the rector is not elected and the position of the rector is not filled at the time of the elections, the senate will appoint an acting rector for up to one year.
Members of the election commission include:
- Priit Kaasik, professor in functional morphology (chair of the commission),
- Tõnu Kollo, professor of mathematical statistics,
- Vello Andres Pettai, professor of comparative politics,
- Karl Erik Piirimees, student,
- Anneli Saro, professor of theatre research.
The commission is supported in its work by academic secretary Andres Soosaar.
